Submitted by Kylie Baker on Wed, 02/06/2010 - 15:22

Professor Pamela H. Bucy, Bainbridge Professor of Law, University of Alabama School of Law.

Biography: Professor Bucy has been a law professor at the Univerisity of Alabama for twenty-three years. Prior to entering academia, she was a federal prosecutor specialising in prosecutions of white collar crimes. She has published seven books and approximately fifty law review or bar journal articles. She has been recognised at the University of Alabama with outstanding teacher and scholar awards. She has testified before the United States Congress twice.

Abstract: The federal False Claims Act in the United States and the mirror statutes being passed by the various state legislatures in the US are a "private attorney general" model of law enforcement. These statutes present incentives (monetary, protection, and now, acclaim) to private individuals who come forward with information about fraud upon the government. These statutes also encourage attorneys to work with prosecutors to bring these cases forth. Professor Bucy's presentation will address the interesting private-public dynamic this partnership creates.
